NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
NHS Scholarships: A College Cost Cutter
The upcoming holiday break is the perfect time for your NHS senior members to apply for an NHS Scholarship. There’s $1 million at stake to be distributed among 400 members. Help your most outstanding senior members offset their college costs by encouraging them to visit www.nhs.us/scholarship. Advisers, be sure to log in and distribute instructions to all eligible members and your principal. The student application deadline is February 1, 2017, and the adviser/principal recommendation deadline is February 10, 2017.
NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award: Another college cost cutter
NJHS advisers: Who are your star members? The holiday break is also an ideal time to start thinking about members you might nominate for an NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award. A total of 500 winners each receive a $500 college savings award. Nominations will open January 30, 2017. Give your top NJHS members a head start by asking them to complete a self-reflection. Download the PDF here. Ask any member you might nominate to complete it and give it back to you. You can use the form to help you complete the student’s nomination. As a reminder, all self-reflection forms are optional and for adviser use only. They are not to be sent to the national office and completion does not guarantee an award.
Virtual College Application Essay Writing Workshops Continue
What do scholarship providers look for in student applications? “Sharing Your Story Through Scholarship Application Essays” is a virtual workshop for NHS members this Wednesday, December 14, at 7:00 p.m. (ET). This session explores essay questions from current scholarship applications and highlights winning essays from previous years. Tell members to visit www.nhs.us/virtualNHS to register. This is the final session in the virtual writing workshop series this calendar year. The holiday break can be another opportunity for members to catch up and watch any previously recorded workshop. All sessions are available on demand via the same link.
Pay It Forward through Student Leadership Initiative
The NASSP Student Leadership Initiative: Global Citizenship is well underway. Now, your members have a chance to show how they are making global change and give back to their favorite cause or charity. Tell them to share how they are making a difference with a post to Instagram using #MakingGlobalChange. One post each month through 2017 will be chosen to win $100 for the chapter’s charity of choice in the chapter’s name. We’re also recruiting students as global change ambassadors to spread the word about the initiative. Tell your students to visit www.makingglobalchange.org to learn how to get involved and get contest details.
Show and Tell—on Instagram!
Have you asked your members recently: How will you #HonorYourFutureNow? We want to see them—making a college visit, exploring career websites, doing homework, or however they’re preparing for their future. Here’s another great holiday break idea. Tell your members to post a picture of themselves engaged in their prep activities to Instagram using #HonorYourFutureNow and tagging @nhs_njhs by February 27, 2017. They could win a celebrity shout-out from 2014 Miss Teen USA K. Lee Graham or YouTube star Ben J. Pierce.
The Suspense is Over
The results are in and we congratulate Frederick Douglass Academy VII in Brooklyn, NY; Edward E. Drew Jr. Middle School in Stafford, VA; and Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, Miami, FL, as the winners in this year’s National Principals Month (NPM) #ThankAPrincipal video contest. Each wins a $200 Best Buy gift card. Watch the winning videos on the NPM website.
